The new report, The Plant-Based Opportunity – European Innovation Investment Budget: Plant-Based Foods & Proteins 2026–2035, has been launched by a coalition of sector partners including Plant-Based Foods Europe, the European Alliance for Plant-Based Foods, the European Vegetable Protein Association and the FoodConNext Foundation.

Why now?
Because Europe faces €900 billion annually in public health costs linked to poor diets, alongside climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing pressure on land and resources.

🌱 The solution: accelerate the shift to plant-based foods and proteins.

The report sets out a €3 billion Innovation Investment Agenda (2026–2035), structured around 75 projects and seven key pillars – from health and sustainable products to better crops, supply chains, and digital innovation.

By 2035, this agenda aims to:

  • Increase plant-based proteins to 50% of total protein intake (from 40%)

  • Strengthen Europe’s food security and reduce import dependency

  • Build new value chains for soy, pea, faba bean, sunflower and oat

  • Boost farmer incomes, jobs and global competitiveness

Other regions, including the United States and China, are scaling fast. Europe must act decisively by aligning policy, investment and innovation to lead the protein transition.

It’s a competitiveness, health and sustainability strategy for Europe’s future.
