Plant-based Foods Europe
Founded in 2003 as the European Natural Soyfood Association (ENSA), our organisation initially represented soy food producers. However, as the industry rapidly expanded and diversified, we transitioned in 2012 to European Plant-Based Foods Association (ENSA). In 2025, the association evolved again becoming Plant-Based Foods Europe to better represent the diverse and dynamic landscape of plant-based alternatives.
Plant-Based Foods Europe members produce high-quality plant-based foods with particular focus on alternatives to dairy and meat, including drinks (based on soy, rice, oats, almond, coconut etc), alternatives to other dairy products (alternatives to yogurt, desserts, creams, ice creams, spreads, cheese) and meat alternatives (tofu, tempeh, seitan, burgers, ready meals etc).
Plant-Based Foods Europe ‘s mission is to contribute to mainstreaming plant-based foods for healthier and more sustainable diets by raising awareness about these products amongst policy makers.
We focus in particular on
We inform about the benefits of plant-based foods in a healthy balanced diet. Thanks to our Scientific Advisory Committee, we base our positions and messages on up-to-date scientific evidence.
We raise awareness about the environmental impact of our current food patterns, where diets incorporating more plant-based foods can help reduce pressure on land and water and create less green-house-gas emissions.
We advocate for fair treatment of plant-based food products, compared to dairy and meat products when it comes to taxation or labelling for instance.
Compliance
Plant-Based Foods Europe members have also adopted “antitrust guidelines” and a “data privacy statement” to ensure that all activities within the Association are in compliance with EU competition and data privacy rules.
